It's Time to Start Planting!
April 20, 2012

First of all, thank you for your patience over the past few months as we have been working to get our garden plans in place! Unfortunately, as often happens with large development projects like this, we have encountered several large setbacks that have delayed our schedule considerably. Since we realize that the time to start planting is now upon us, we decided to come up with an alternate plan that will allow us to still get in the ground this year while working out some of the kinks of the larger Fountain Gate Gardens master plan.
Our proposed plan for this year is to construct a "temporary" community garden area at our location on Cherokee Street that will allow those of you still looking for a place to garden this year to do so. Here are the details of what we are proposing:
- We will offer up to 20-25 community garden plots (based on demand). Each plot will be approximately 5' x 12' in size. Since this will be a "temporary" placement for the garden, we will not be constructing raised beds at thist time. Rather, we will provide you with a "raised mound" type of bed that garden members may place temporary borders around if they so desire (wood planks, stones, edging fences, etc. There will be some guidelines in place for aesthetic purposes, and any borders will have to be removed at the end of the year. However, due to the method in which the plots will be constructed, borders will not be necessary to maintain the stability of your plot.)
- The garden will be open for planting by mid -to -late May. You will be able to grow in your plot throughout the year, until the end of the fall growing season. (Official beginning and end dates will be announced shortly)
- The community garden plots will be located within a fenced in area shared with the Cobb County Master Gardener's Plant A Row program. This will allow greater community building opportunities and will mean that experts will be close at hand to help you with your gardening questions.
- We will also be offering educational classes throughout the year. The classes will cover a variety of topics based on interest and will incorporate both seminar formats and hands-on teaching times in the garden. Community garden members will be able to attend these classes for eiither no charge or at discounted rates.
- Garden members will have access to community tools and seeds, if they desire. Shared hoses will also be available for watering your plot.
- Cost: $20 per plot
This is a proposed plan at this time and some details may change slightly over the next few weeks.
If you are interested in reserving a plot for this year, please let us know by signing up here: http://eepurl.com/k7cZb
By signing up, you are not "locked in" at this time. However, those individuals who sign up now will be given first priority when we start accepting lease aggreements in the next few weeks. Remember, there will only be an limited number of beds available this year, so if you are at all considering getting one, sign up now! Due to the volume of interest to date, we expect that the beds will sell out fairly quickly.
Thank you again for your patience. If you have any questions regarding the garden and our plans for this year, please send them to garden@fountaingate.com.
I'm excited to see this program get started and I look forward to meeting all of our new Community Garden members very soon!

Master Plan Disclaimer:
The attached plan is a ‘master plan’ only and is intended to convey the major components of the garden grounds to be implemented over an extended period of time. Specific details such as plot sizes, field layout, fencing, plantings, dimensions and materials will develop organically and are subject to change without notice. This plan should not be used for construction without further development of detailed site grading and layout plans to ensure the site is accessible.
